lessons from the irish election
Evening shadows stretching towards the Wicklow mountains.
Me telling Aunty Teresa about the waitress saying the IRA had nothing to do with Sinn Fein and how she had smiled guiltily when I asked her "but did you support Sinn Fein even when the IRA was running it?" and then her answering: "I did. I'd love to see a united Ireland."
The aunt listened to this anecdote and chimed in: "I'd love to see a united Ireland too."
My gentle preraphaelite features went a bit gothic.
"It does have a lovely sound," I mused. "United Ireland. It's like Mornning After Pill. So much nicer than Kill A Baby pill. Yes. The words United Ireland are so much sweeter than Murder a Million People Ireland To Install Soviet Marxian Islamist Allied IRA Drug Dealers As Our Government. Funny how this fine sounding unity gag is always at somebody's expense. I mean someone has to die for it or be enslaved. Look around. The Walloons want a united Belgium too but without any Flemish people in it. The Serbs want a united Yugoslavia but without any Croats or Slovenians or Bosnians or Muslims in it and vice versa. Omar Ahmed Hassan Al Bashir wanted a united Sudan so badly that he killed four million people for it over the last thirty years. Southern Sudan still seceded by the way. Omar just couldn't kill enough of them apparently. But he'd gotten fond of killing during his thirty year rule so when there was unrest in Sudan's Western province of Darfur, he killed a quarter of a million there too for a United Sudan. A United Sudan! United Ireland indeed. So sweet the sound. How many people would you kill Aunt before you'd admit that lovely sounding words and pipe dreams aren't enough reason to murder even one person? Oh you wouldn't kill any. But the IRA would kill as many as it takes. And then they'd continue selling the rest of us their drugs, murdering 500 of us annually in overdoses as they have been doing for the last half century, hooking another couple of thousand kids annually on the same drugs to replace their deceased customers, and causing 500 deaths annually by suicide, and another 500 deaths annually in their mob hits, on and on, in perpetuity."
