4th December 2007, by Lilian Healy

A cold December morning
Ronan Collins on Radio 1
I sit in my kitchen
and look out on the garden.
I see a tree.
There is only one leaf left on it
Swinging and swaying
But hanging in there.
Reminds me in some
weird way
of me.
I wonder why?

my mother is a young girl again
standing at the edge of a field
near Berney's Inch
ready to leave
across the field
invisibly we stand
together and each alone
waiting for her to see us
her husband her daughters
her sons
we raise our hands
to catch her sight
but she cannot see us
she is too young for us yet
she sees only the sky
and the green fields beneath
the way young eyes do
and she looks at the road
leading away
towards us
and feels on her skin
the clear breath of sunlight
she is made for the world
in her own way
she is life about to make life
she is youth about to blossom
out of a particular destiny
into her own triumph
she is herself
but she is all of our past
and all of our future too
she is looking and waiting
as we wait
for everything to come true
(This is David Whyte's famous poem about his mother. It speaks to me about my own mother and so I have reprinted it. I have altered certain parts to fit our situation. My mother had one birth daughter, Marie. The several daughters referred to in the poem are Marie and then Fiona and Jackie who married my brothers, and Frances and Annie, two nieces who became daughters to my mother.)

Jerusalem, take off your dress of sorrow and distress,
Put on the beauty of God's glory for evermore,
Wrap the cloak of God's saving justice around you,
Put the diadem of the Eternal One's glory on your head,
For God means to show your splendour to every nation under heaven,
And the name God gives you for evermore will be,
Peace-through-Justice and Glory-through-Devotion,
Arise Jerusalem stand on the heights and turn your eyes to the east:
See your children reassembled from west and east,
At the Holy One's command,
Rejoicing because God has remembered.
Though they left you on foot
Driven by enemies,
Now God brings them back to you,
Carried gloriously, like a royal throne.
For God has decreed the flattening
Of each high mountain,
Of the everlasting hills,
The filling of the valleys
To make the ground level
So that Israel can walk safely
In God's glory.
And the forests and every fragrant tree
Will provide shade
For Israel, at God's command;
For God will guide Israel in joy
By the light of his glory,
With the mercy and saving justice
Which come from him.

joy cometh in the morning

into the dawn gentle soul gentle soul

Jesus: "Why do you grieve?"
James: "Because my light, my life, my hope, my truth, my friend, my love, my joy, my glory, has gone to you. To you who are Light Life Hope Truth Friendship Love Joy Glory."
Jesus: "Why does it hurt you so, since you know she has come to me?"
James: "It can only hurt so much because we loved so much."
Jesus: "Then this sorrow also is a gift and will be joy in the morning."
James: "Yes my Lord."
Jesus: "How will you live?"
James: "I will live by your Light, by your Life, by your Hope, by your Truth, by your Friendship, by your Love, by your Joy, by your Glory. I will defy the evil spirits who tell me life is not worth living. I know life is from you as love is. I will live in your love.I will live by your grace. I can because you are God. I reject Satan and the evil spirits. Even in grief, I love life. I claim the blood of Christ."
Jesus: "Do this and you will enter into my kingdom."
James: "Amen."
